I’ve always been a firm believer in the saying “Education is power.” Whether it is formal or informal education, learning new things and expanding your skills is always a smart move. In my apartment I have stacks of books in my bedroom and living room that attest to how much I like to read. I mainly read business books for inspiration and to learn new skills, so here are 5 of my favorite business books that every businessman, entrepreneur, and marketer should read:
Gary Vee is all about delivering free content. His philosophy is that if you offer massive value to people, they will want to do business with you. If you follow him on Snapchat, Instagram, or YouTube, his videos are all about motivating people and giving advice on how to start a business.
When I first got into social media marketing all I knew was Facebook. Facebook is still the king of social media in many ways, but there are other great social media sites as well. I later discovered how to use Instagram and Twitter. While all three of these are great and have their advantages, there is one that I have found to have a ton of potential that a lot of marketers don’t utilize: Pinterest.
I wish I knew smart ways to invest my money for retirement sooner, but late is better than never. If I had that knowledge when I was 18 or 19 then I could’ve had a lot of extra money saved. I’m lucky that I have a father who has experience investing money into stocks and bonds. I also have an interest in it because I want my money to work for me and grow.
When I was 24, I spent months brainstorming business ideas. I knew that I wanted to start a business but wasn’t sure how a young guy with little money and experience could start one. I had already learned all about Richard Branson and how he defied the odds to become a rich, successful entrepreneur, but there was something else missing from the puzzle. Weeks later I was browsing the bookstore and picked up a book that looked interesting: Rise and Grind by Daymond John.
A lot of young adults, myself included, followed the traditional career model growing up. You get good grades in high school. Then you go to college, work hard, do an internship, try to network, then graduate. After a lot of job applications and a couple years working low wage jobs, you land an entry level position in your field and everything is good. You slowly work your way up and get progressively more and more money. That’s how it’s supposed to work right?
I have never liked working for others, that’s a fact. I got my first job when I was 16 working for a guy who did a lot of odd jobs. Mowing lawns, installing docks, shrink-wrapping boats, things like that. I had a few other manual labor jobs because that’s the best I could get as a teenager and the pay was decent. I never had a great work ethic because these jobs were not careers to me, they were temporary jobs to help me pay for college and other expenses.
