This is an article that I didn’t really plan out and am writing off the cuff, but sometimes those are the best.
The other day a guy on Facebook asked a question in a group where I’m a member. He asked “What do you guys do when you’re bored?” The answers that the other guys gave were all across the board: swimming, read books, go on Facebook, drink scotch, any random thing you could imagine. I’m a very practical, determined guy so I gave him four things to do that would be very beneficial. Out of the 50+ answers given, he said that he liked my response the best. So here are the four things you should when you are bored:
This one comes naturally to me, I’m a big fan of working out and have a whole brand around it after all. Working out is one of the best things you can do for your health or when you are bored. Working out is great for your heart health, mental health, and confidence. You will also look better and feel better. There is a lot of variety in how you can work out, and science has proven time and time again of the many benefits. Working out is also addictive, your brain releases endorphins and serotonin, which put you in a overall better mood by relieving stress, reducing pain, and creating a euphoric feeling. It’s like a natural high. I wrote two articles on this: Why Exercise is the Best Gift You Can Give Yourself and also What’s Stopping You From Exercising? that go deeper into why it’s so beneficial.
Find a New Hobby
It’s kinda odd when someone tells me they don’t have a hobby. Or if it’s just a time-waster like scrolling through Facebook or binge-watching Netflix. Getting a hobby is important because you need something that is enjoyable and relieves stress. You need to pick something that is interesting and a good distraction for when you have down time. Also, people I know who have hobbies are happier than people who don’t. Whether it is biking, painting, dancing, lifting weights, building furniture, or any of 100 other things, you need that hobby to escape work and obligations. It is also important to have it as a creative outlet. For example, my hobbies are working out, playing video games, comedy, and collecting football cards. These are all enjoyable activities that I do because I love them.
Learn a New Skill
Learning a new skill is great for two reasons: 1. Learning something that is fun or interesting or 2. Learning something that is practical and/or can make you money. If you are sitting around bored, why not learn something new? When I graduated college I knew that I would need new skills to get ahead and become a decent marketer. That is why I studied SEO, SQL, Google Analytics, and bought online courses from successful entrepreneurs. This one is especially important if you don’t like your job or want more money… which is most people, let’s be honest. Learning a new language or even something as simple as how to change a tire or do your own taxes can be very beneficial.
Start a Business or Side Job
Now we’re talking! This is arguably the best and most practical thing you can do with your free time. If you’re bored on the weekends with nothing to do, why not pick up some extra hours of work? I’ve known plenty of people over the years who make an extra $100 a week from waiting tables, getting a 2nd job, or babysitting kids. These days this is necessary for most people, about 70% of all Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Plus, working is better than doing nothing: you’re making money and filling your time with something meaningful. Starting a business is great too, especially if you have the entrepreneur spirit like I do. There is always a time and money risk for starting a business, but if you succeed the reward is excellent. I wrote an article Why Entrepreneurship and Side Hustles Are Becoming More Popular that goes over this in more detail and with more examples.
There you go, no more excuses for being bored. These are the best methods I’ve found for conquering boredom and being productive at the same time. What do you do when you’re bored? Let me know in the comments below. As always, thanks for reading!
