The new year has arrived and everyone is making their resolutions. I already wrote my stance on all that here so I’m not going to dig into it again. A lot of people, filled with motivation and drive, will get a gym membership. They will go religiously for a couple weeks, maybe even a month, then lose their focus. They’ll start making excuses about how they don’t have the time or energy to do it. Their gym membership will collect dust, in a sense, and it’s likely they’ll never use it. (On a side note, a lot of big gyms rely on customers like this in order to be profitable.) What I’m telling you today is that this is a big mistake and a missed opportunity, because exercise truly is the best gift you can give yourself.
I’ve done articles on how exercise builds confidence and all the benefits of exercise, but I really want to drive this point home. This article goes out to everyone who is in a ‘funk’ or a dark place right now. We’ve all been there, believe me. At a fundamental level I am an angry, anxious person. I’m often anti-social and would rather spend time by myself than people I barely know. One of the main reasons I was able to overcome these personality traits and change my whole mentality was through exercise. Do I still have bad days? Absolutely. But exercise can change your world, completely flipping your state of mind. It will give you the confidence and positive energy you need to pull yourself up and work hard.
I highly recommend getting a cheap gym membership, you just need the basics, but you can exercise anywhere for free. Some days I’ll do mountain climbers in my living room while I’m watching tv, just for the hell of it and to feel better. Or I’ll grab my headphones and listen to my favorite tracks while I do push-ups. That little adrenaline rush and endorphin boost you get will improve your mood almost immediately, and it’s completely free.
The most successful people I know career-wise make exercise a big part of their life as well. Also, some of the least successful people I know exercise rarely or not at all. It shouldn’t be a surprise, because they go together. That’s the main theme of my blog and brand after all. Fitness, business skills, and keeping yourself motivated are the three factors that will bring your dreams within reach. You must have that business-savvy, entrepreneurship mentality. You need to always be learning new things in your industry and experimenting. But you also must get your blood pumping, hit the weights, and eat right. You need that confidence, strength, and health to be at the top of your game. Improve yourself both physically and mentally.
Maybe you haven’t exercised in a while or you’re not in good shape? That’s okay, just start slow and go from there. Run an extra 30 seconds, add an extra 5 lbs. of weight, make incremental goals. Make time to exercise even if it’s just 5 or 10 minutes a day. Do whatever works best for you, make it fun and personal. Challenge yourself to gain the motivation and ‘Hustle’ you need to succeed.
